sandwiched between the dermis and epidermis is the germinative or basal layer where the skin cells and formed.Millions are gernerated every day in
the facial skin alone. They emerge plump and moist but immediately.begin a journey to the sureface during which they transform. As the cell migrate upwards, their nucleus breaks down and they fill with keratin,a
tough protein that helps marke them flatter and drier. All this takes around 30 days - the older you are, the longer it takes.
By the time they reach the outermost lacyer of the epidermis, called the stratum corneum,
the cell are tough and scaly and in just the state to provide a horny,
protective coating for the epidermis.
After marking it through the 20 layers of the stratum corneum, the cells are glued together with fatty compounds on the surface. Here they stay until they destroyed (before their time) by detergants in cleansers or (more naturally) shed to join the dust on your household furniture.
